The "Workshop of young leaders in Asia health policy" will take place at SCPKU on June 21, 2017, just prior to the annual primary care Forum. This special event convened in honor of the Stanford Asia Health Policy Program's 10th anniversary. It will feature short research panels by a dozen young health policy experts from Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Korea, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, the Philippines, Thailand, the United States, and Vietnam. The luncheon colloquium will feature comparative perspectives on the major health policy challenges facing Asia as well as specific examples of how evidence-based policymaking can improve lives throughout the Asia-Pacific region.

A growing body of evidence suggests that China’s schooling system, as it stands today, is unable to produce the high-skilled labor that will be needed if the nation is to avoid the middle-income trap. How does poor parenting and inadequate early childhood development attribute to this problem? Prof. Rozelle will discuss his research on cognitive delays among toddlers in rural China, and the national crisis that the country faces due to inadequate childhood development.  

 

Scott Rozelle holds the Helen Farnsworth Endowed Professorship at Stanford University and is Senior Fellow in the Food Security and Environment Program and the Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center, Freeman Spogli Institute (FSI) for International Studies. For the past 30 years, he has worked on the economics of poverty reduction. Currently, his work on poverty has its full focus on human capital, including issues of rural health, nutrition and education. Rozelle has been the chair of the International Advisory Board of the Center for Chinese Agricultural Policy, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) for the past 20 years. He is the co-director of the Rural Education Action Project (REAP).

My Journey at the Nuclear Brink is a continuation of William J. Perry's efforts to keep the world safe from a nuclear catastrophe. Decades of experience and special access to top-secret knowledge of strategic nuclear options have given Perry a unique, and chilling, vantage point from which to conclude that nuclear weapons endanger our security rather than securing it. At this presentation to launch the Chinese translation of his book, Perry will talk about the future of nuclear competition in the face of US and Russia’s nuclear capability boost claims, North Korea’s nuclear development and the recent deployment of US and South Korea THAAD system against North Korea’s missile.

About the Event

“No Pain, No Gain” is a periodic event that will highlight China-based entrepreneurs with roots at Stanford University. Entrepreneurs will discuss the challenges they faced and how they overcame them. Using the Graduate School of Business’ state-of-the-art distance learning technology, there will be audiences at Stanford and at the Stanford Center at Peking University (SCPKU).

The discussion will take the form of a structured conversation between the entrepreneur and a moderator, either a professor from the GSB or a subject matter expert selected for his or her familiarity with the entrepreneur and/or the sector.

This time, two young female entrepreneurs, Gu Ji MBA '12, Cordy Xie MBA '16, are invited to share their stories and what is the biggest challenges facing them when starting the new ventures. 

On the Stanford side the audience will consist of current Stanford students and GSB alumni with an interest in entrepreneurship in China. In Beijing the audience will consist of Stanford alumni and current students at Peking University and Tsinghua University. The event will be in English. Admission to this event is free of charge.

Formal organizational structures have expanded, worldwide, over recent decades, particularly in the neo-liberal period. In the background are the scientization of many aspects of social life, expanded conceptions of human empowerment, and the consequent explosive expansion of education.  Educational systems have a great deal in common worldwide, so expanding international organizational structures are also common. Prof. Meyer will discuss the domestic and international expansion of organizations, including for-profit, non-profit, and public agencies of all sorts, and the consequential rise of social movements for organizational “social responsibility.” 

John W. Meyer is Professor of Sociology (and, by courtesy, Education), emeritus, at Stanford.  He has contributed to organizational theory, comparative education, and the sociology of education, developing sociological institutional theory.  Since the 1970s, he has studied the impact of global society on national states and societies. In 2003 he completed a collaborative study of worldwide science and its national effects. He is currently working on a collaborative project on the impact of globalization on organizational structures.

Dr. Cohen is the Associate Vice Chancellor for Global Health, and the Yeargan-Bate Distinguished Professor of Medicine in Microbiology and Immunology, and Epidemiology at University of North Carolina. He received his BS from the University of Illinois, Urbana, and MD from the Rush Medical College. His research focuses on the transmission and prevention of transmission of STD pathogens including HIV. Much of his work has been conducted at the research sites he and his group have developed in Lilongwe, Malawi and Beijing, China. Dr. Cohen and his coworkers have identified the concentration of HIV in genital secretions required for transmission of HIV, and the effects of genital tract inflammation on HIV. Dr. Cohen is currently studying Zika as a sexually transmitted disease.

Professor Khosla is the recipient of multiple distinguished awards including the Arthur C. Cope Scholar Award (2009) and Pure Chemistry Award (2000) of the American Chemical Society, and the Alan T. Waterman Award of the National Science Foundation (1999).

In addition to his role as the founding Director of Stanford ChEM-H, he serves on the Board of Directors of Protagonist Therapeutics (PTGX) and is a member of the Scientific Policy Committee of the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. His laboratory research focuses on problems where deep insights into enzymology and metabolism can be harnessed to improve human health.

By 2050, two out of three people will live in cities worldwide. The addition of 2.5 billion urban dwellers requires cities to accommodate the needs of a rapidly growing population. As Chinese and American cities confront environmental problems, housing costs, congestion, and widening social inequity, the Stanford Human Cities Initiative (HCI) works to address these urgent issues by advancing a human-centered approach to cities in order to benefit the environment, economy, and society at large.

 

The Stanford Human Cities Initiative is an interdisciplinary effort based out of the Program on Urban Studies. Recognizing that cities are complex, the HCI works to cultivate a 21st-century century mindset and tools to address urban challenges. Drawing from rigorous methods from engineering, architecture, planning, and design, its mission is to combine these approaches and enable cities to reach their full potential beyond the siloed approach of one discipline. The HCI works simultaneously at the global and local scales to ensure that these approaches are complementary, while prioritizing human relationships and social inclusion.

 

Join Deland Chan and Kevin Hsu, co-founders of the Stanford Human Cities Initiative, in a conversation about the future of cities. They will discuss the framing of the “human city” and the benefits of an interdisciplinary and multi-sector approach. Learn how you can get involved with the Initiative’s efforts to engage departments from within and outside Stanford, as well as partnerships with international NGOs, community-based organizations, and the private sector.

 

The talk will follow student presentations from the International Urbanization Seminar, a Human Cities course offered in long-term collaboration with Tsinghua University.

DESIGN UNDER UNCERTAINTY: APPLICATIONS IN AIRCRAFT DESIGN AND WATER RESOURCES

Rick Walter Fenrich, Aeronautics & Astronautics Department, Stanford University

What do stock market investments and aircraft design have in common? They both contain uncertainties! For example, one can never be sure of next year's stock returns or exactly what weather an aircraft will fly in. Despite their differences, in fact both disciplines can use similar techniques to manage their uncertainties. Engineers can use these techniques to make predictions about the behavior of the stock market or aircraft performance, leading to savings in time, saving (or making) money, and in the case of aircraft design, confidently achieving a required level of safety. His research seeks to advance these techniques and integrate them with optimization methods used in design. Rick is also expanding my application area to water resources engineering at Peking University.

COMMUNICATING WITH LIGHT ON COMPUTER CHIPS

Light has been used for centuries as a mode of communication between people such as by light houses, signal lamps, or even mirrors reflecting the sunlight. Recently, light has also revolutionized the world of telecommunications by transmitting our long-distance telephone calls, Internet traffic, and cable TV signals. However, one area in which light can still make significant advances is the communication of information between or within computer chips, otherwise known as the field of "silicon photonics," which can reduce power dissipation and increase speed in computer chips. Her research seeks to answer how to first generate light on computer chips.

Developed, competitive banking systems are crucial for economic development. Yet, both cross-country and historical research has found that the emergence of such banking systems requires the rise of a limited government in the first place. Set against the extant literature, China becomes a big anomaly: the number of commercial banks in China has increased exponentially in the reform era without political change. Building and exploiting a unique spatial dataset covering all Chinese banks and bank branches built in the reform era—combined with existing datasets on Chinese firms, archival materials, as well as fieldwork—my dissertation seeks first to distill the political economic logic of bank proliferation in China, and second to assess the economic and distributive consequences of bank proliferation.
